Another record delivery of a technically challenging and time constrained site, set for development in Sydney’s booming property market. RMA were presented with the challenge of delivering a tight program upon which the site divestment was relied upon and consistent with that providing a design and construct methodology for the onsite bioremediation of a significant volume of chlorinated ethene and petroleum hydrocarbon impacted soils at the former Boral asphalt plant site. Practical completion of the works would be recognised upon the successful handover to the client of a Final Validation Report, Site Audit Report and Site Audit Statement from the independent Site Auditor.
Key to the project success was RMA engaging an experienced project team to deliver the project outcomes including JBS&G environmental consultants and Zoic Environmental EPA Site Auditor with a proven track record of delivering similar scopes on other major remediation projects.
The bioremediation methodology developed by RMA was originally anticipated to be associated with a treatment timeframe campaign of up to 2 months duration for batched materials. The actual treatment timeframe was in the order of about 3-4 weeks for individual treatment batches, less than half the anticipated treatment timeframe. During the bioremediation process, occupational hygiene and environmental monitoring performed by JBS&G indicated that all engineering management controls at the site were adequate and below the threshold levels of the AQMP and in line with bioremediation best practice principles. The reduced treatment timeframe allowed an acceleration of this component of the programme and practical completion and handover of the site to the client prior to the critical site divestment timeline.
The numbers:
- Remediation of 1,000m3 of friable asbestos and 5,000m3 of bonded asbestos impacted fill materials
- Excavation and Onsite treatment via enhanced bioremediation techniques of approximately 70,000m3 of chlorinated ethene and petroleum hydrocarbon impacted soils
- Extensive cut & fill earthworks activities were carried out across the 6 hectare site including landscaping activities for erosion and dust control post remediation works
